Total range gauge

Hi all....I am a new member....I am having issues with my total range gauge. Whenever I drive my car my total range gauge does not move until I have driven around 20 miles...then it moves up and down up and down. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the cause. Thanks

Welcome fejer! I can't offer any help on the cause other than to say it is definitely a glitch; mine is not that variable, and starts to show decreased range after driving a quarter of a mile.
What I've noticed is that the total range gauge is steady for the first 40 or so miles because those miles are being driven on electric. When the ICE kicks in, the total now excludes electric and starts to reflect range based on driving pattern. So if your acceleration or speed changes, that effect gets magnified and reflected on the gauge.

The E-Range gauge is pretty linear and responds in real time. But when you are running the ICE (Gas Engine), there is delay and the gauge stays steady for a while then jumps down. It seems like it loses contact with the gas level sensor for a while, then catches up. It's annoying but not really dangerous, unless you are running very low on gas. In my experience, the low gas warnings tend to be very accurate, so you should rely on those when you are getting close to empty, but not on the total range.
Is your gas tank full? If not, top it off. The gas tank is a saddleback design, and as the gas sloshes back and forth between the two sides, it does weird things to the gas gauge. Mostly comes down to a software issue though, being just a bit too sensitive.
Thanks for the info guys....very helpful.
A couple of times (over nine months), I've driven 2-3 miles in Stealth with 50 showing on the range. At first I was thinking I must have one h*ll of a battery until I noticed that the gen/regen indicator was frozen at 12 o'clock. But after applying the brakes, the car returned to normal and range adjusted itself down to 46-47, where it should have been in the first place.
