Ray Lane, chairman of Fisker Automotive and of its investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, will be given the keys to its first production car on 26 July.

The Fisker Karma is the world's first luxury extended range EV or EREV, powered by twin 201hp electric motors that can be augmented by a gasoline-fuelled on-board generator, and capable of delivering over 300 miles of range and a top speed of 125mph. Designed by Henrik Fisker and assembled by Valmet Automotive in Finland, the Signature Series Fisker Karma will be delivered to Ray Lane at the Kleiner Perkins HQ in Menlo Park, California.

I am betting that there is some confusion over Signature Edition #1 and regular production #1. I am betting that since all Signature Editions are EcoSports of a silver color and a one-time use interior called Mirage Tri-Tone, that this does not appeal to Leo DiCaprio, so that he is probably regular production #1 and that it is an Eco-Chic model with his color choice of exterior and interior. Just my humble opinion based on my limited knowledge of the car and the people involved.

See report of the delivery with photos here. There were local TV reporters in the the press pool so it may actually end up on the evening news. It will be interesting to start seeing the car around town and in Palo Alto.

Looks like a goldish silver color - not quite pure silver silver. I think one article called it "Silver Mirage" - wonder if that's how all the "Signature Series" Karmas look.

First Fisker production cars roll off lines

* Fisker backer Leonardo di Caprio gets first model

* Vehicles start at $95,900

By Sarah McBride and Poornima Gupta

SAN FRANCISCO, July 26 (Reuters) - Fisker Automotive has started doling out its long-anticipated extended-range electric cars -- and chairman of the board Ray Lane wasn't the first to get one.

That car went to actor Leonardo di Caprio, who also is a Fisker investor. He wasn't showing off his new car to reporters on Tuesday, but Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers managing partner Ray Lane was.

Lane espoused the Fisker Karma's virtues as the media circled the sedan, tucked away in the back area of Kleiner's Sand Hill Road parking lot. The firm is a major Fisker investor.

Fisker Karmas, plug-in hybrid vehicles that have missed several launch dates, have been highly anticipated by the environmentally friendly and well-heeled car buyers who form their target market.

Another alternative fuel car, the all-electric Roadster, made by Silicon Valley-based Tesla Motors (TSLA.O), went into production in 2008. Lane said the Karmas would appeal to a different set of carbuyers who wanted backup from a gas engine.

Last year, Fisker closed on a $529 million loan from a Department of Energy program to spur the development of alternative vehicles. Tesla and Nissan are among the other companies to win similar loans.

Lane said he would be putting aside his regular commuting vehicle, a Porsche, in favor of the Karma. (Reporting by Sarah McBride and Poornima Gupta; editing by Carol Bishopric)
