So while my dealership is under reconstruction I was asked to help out at our Range Rover store . I looked at a 2004 Range Rover with a dead battery the problem is the alternator .
Went to parts to get a price on a new alternator when they gave me the price I thought they were kidding . I've worked on a lot of different cars over the years but this takes the cake . Without labor just the part was $ 2971.00 it seems BMW made the motor and the alternator is also cooled by the cooling system.

Is that a joke? Almost $3000 for an alternator? It is ridiculous. These gas guzzlers (Range Rovers) look nice but they are real expensive to run. I have a neighbour with a super chrged HSE model and he says he can see the gas gage going down as he's driving his car. What's worse is that they handle like a boat and the drive is so uncomfortable. Why are we obsessed with these gas guzzlers? You hardly see any of these in Europe as they have better sense than to waste money on these heaps of junk (apologies to Range Rover owners on the forum). Yes, many of us can afford them, but who wants to buy them?

I bought a 12-year old Range Rover as my snow car when I was in New Hampshire, and I mean that literally.

The alternator failed and cost $800 to replace. Funny thing is, it was still cheaper to buy and maintain that car than to get winter tires for the Karma that I will never get to use again.

I can see the newer model with the water-cooled alternator costing $3K. Not a huge surprise, really.

Sorry Fab; I didn't want to insult anyone honestly. Range Rovers have been around for a long time and they do perform well generally and I guess all import cars are expensive for parts. I know what you mean with the winter wheels and tires for Fisker. They are bloody expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The one in the shop is a 2004 but we also have 2016 in the shop with problems nice cars to look at but customers come in with lists of complaints .
No matter how many problems they have we can't keep any new ones in stock they sell them like they are going out of style . I have a Fisker customer who bought two limited edition Rovers that cost 200K each .
I know on one model running boards are a 10K Option they also install them like no tomorrow.

@FiskerZee I did not take anything you said as anything remotely resembling an insult. I have been a fan of English cars for a long time, and as a result, have enjoyed meeting the most friendly and interesting folks while waiting on the side of the road for the tow truck to arrive. Not every decision we make has to be rational.

To paraphrase Henrik Fisker, anything more than basic transportation (e,g, Chevy Cruze, Ford Escort, etc.) fulfills our emotional needs, not the need for transportation. Some people need more emotional fluffing than others, apparently.

Fab; Thanks. My other car, by the way, is an Aston Martin DB7 GT, almost but not quite as beautiful as the Fisker. Regards.
