I learned some new things recently about the causes for the Malfunction Indicator Light/Check Engine Light (often abbreviated as MIL or CEL). Instead of posting to the various threads where these different causes are being discussed I thought I would try to consolidate the topic and create a thread dedicated to MIL issues and lessons learned.

Forum users, please help by keeping this thread on topic and only post replies related to the MIL, thanks!

The MIL indication illuminates for a variety of reasons. While initially and primarily meant to be an indication of an emissions system issue, on our Karma's the light illuminates due to several causes. While the MIL is illuminated the clock display in Stealth mode and the digital speed display in Sport mode is disabled.

Software version 6.15 addresses many but not all of the issues which lead to an MIL display. Here are some of the known open reasons and recommended solutions or workarounds:

  • Loose or missing gas cap. As an FYI, The vehicle will run the ICE whenever the gas cap is replaced after fueling regardless of Stealth/Sport mode selection. This is normal.
  • An actual emissions system issue, such as a sticking evap valve
  • Potentially serious issues such as ICE misfires
  • OBD Code U019B: Lost Communication with Battery Charger Control Module. This occurs when the vehicle is charging and is interrupted by the car 'waking up' due to a door opening or locking/unlocking. According to my dealership there is now a software patch available to adjust the software that leads to this code. My dealership is now installing the patch on all of their customer vehicles. Note: This patch is not part of 6.15. It was released around the same time but isn't incorporated into the 6.15 delivery. You need to have this installed in addition to 6.15.
  • OBD Code P18BF: Neutral Input B Circuit Switch Stick High. I learned of this today, as it a happened to me. Apparrently, whenever you put the car in Neutral it resets some count of issues or occurances that car maintains. I'm not exactly sure *what* is being counted, but if this count reaches a certain threshold this will generate the code and MIL. According to my dealer there is a software investigation under way now to fix this problem on all vehicles. He says that their engineers say an easy way to ensure it doesn’t come back on is to simply press the Neutral button once every couple days, perhaps while shifting into or out of park.

AFAIK, there is no way for an end-user to self diagnose MIL codes and issues. There are OBD-II readers on the market that will allow you to download and sometimes clear codes that lead to the MIL, but there is no resource publicly available to translate those codes to causes and issues specific to our Fiskers. If you encounter the MIL you should have your Fisker technician investigate the root cause. While most MIL indicators are benign or display in error and can be safely ignored, others are potentially serious.

A flashing MIL is often indicative of a very serious issue. The vehicle should not be driven (and in many cases cannot be driven) until this is resolved.

If you know of other MIL causes and/or solutions please post them below, thanks!

Thanks, very useful. My own experience with 6.15 was to lose the CEL/MIL light for about a day. Which I enjoyed as I really like the little clock. My own dealer says to ignore the light. I think I'll reconsider, and ask them to check it out.

I hadctheCEL light after installing 6.15. I took the car back to the dealer and they flushed it out. So far it has not reappeared. Keeping my fingers crossed.

is there any way to self reset the CEL? I tried a hard reset.. tried cutting the red wire and hooking it up to my dewalt drill battery... ok fine.. I didn't do that.. haha

after the hard reset I got the "Ready" indicator flashing and the car wouldn't go into drive.. let the car fall asleep and all was ok.. except the CEL is still on.

Kyle, The MIL illuminates for a variety of reasons. While a hard reset may clear some, and using an ODB-II scanner may allow you to clear some, there are others that can only be cleared by a Fisker dealer. In fact, some codes can only be cleared by the Fisker regional service rep and not even a dealer tech.

My service rep told me yesterday that 6.15 eliminated the issue of worrying about opening the door while charging. I tried it a couple of times and no more CEL for me after 6.15
Well, maybe. Mine left with a CEL, was returned without the CEL (after 6.15 update) and then a day later, the CEL is back.

Only explanation is that a friend opened the door while charging....

From what I understand, the MIL from opening a door while charging is addressed in a recently released software patch, but not one that's part of 6.15. There is a separate software download required. My dealer installed 6.15 and this patch simultaneously on my car but they are calling back all of the other cars they upgraded to 6.15 to add it. Just because you have 6.15 doesn't mean you have the required patch.

Mine came on yesterday while my car was charging (level 2) and I had my keys in my pocket......One of my guy's noticed my light s flash and all the windows went down again....That Damn key fob!!
sure enough went out to check and now the CEL is staying on. SO evidently 615 did not resolve this issue.
I think they should disable this function while the car is charging. I would think this would be a simple software fix.

Grebechini, read the post right above yours. There is a software fix available that isn't part of 6.15

too had the latest 6.28 done on Friday and no luck on the CEL. it came on as soon as a door was opened while charging. You would think they can fix it by now

I've had my Karma since December 22nd. I have driven mine 4500 miles. Pretty much all without the CEL. The only time I had a CEL were the last couple of weeks before upgrading to 6.15 and then immediately after getting the car back with 6.15. I did a hard reset and haven't seen a CEL since. The only annoying issue I've had with 6.15 is I usually have to manually make the car remember my fob so I can get my radio presets back.

agree with Sigurd- have had CEL but went away
I always do a PDNR "series" every morning just and I think this prevents any faults. I am told every 8 on/off cycles, the N had to be pressed so by doing this it is good to go.

6.15 issue with key fob and radio presets is a nuisance- getting 6.28 Friday so hopefully will resolve. Other than that no major issues
