The chargers are set up to communicate wirelessly with Zigbee-enabled devices, including smart meters, and both can be upgraded to access cellular networks or Wi-Fi.
The WiFi upgrade is what jacks up the price on other units. This one only costs $700, for example:

But that's for the basic unit without WiFi connectivity or programming capability. If you want those features, the price doubles to $1400. Given that the cheap Siemens units also require an upgrade for WiFi capability, to get a comparably equipped unit, the price is back above $1000.

I just got my quote from Blink Charger and it only cost $1,395 plus freight. They will drop ship it to me. I am using my dryer power to run it since we do not use the dry at night or early mornings. That is good because I am using all my 200 amp panel now. So the insultion cost should be under $500.00 for me. This includes the wifi version.
