This article just appeared an hour ago:

Short end of it is that a study at MIT showed that after 1500 rapid charge-discharge cycles the batteries from A123 Systems only lost 10% of the original capacity which is pretty good.

Nice to know, because I'll be fully charging that battery 2 times a day (2 x 70 kms), 4 times a week, 48 weeks a year, so 1536 times in 4 years time. After 5 years I will probably need a new battery, which by then should be lighter, provide more range and be cheaper (if the gurus are right).

I'll be curious to see how the A123 batteries perform in cold and hot climates. Li-Ion batteries typically drain very quickly in cold weather, but luckily it doesn't get horribly cold here in Austin for much of the year. But it does get hot as hell for 3+ months out of the year, so I'm a little concerned about overheating.

On a sunny day, when the car is sitting on a parking lot, the solar roof panel should provide extra cooling power for the interior and the battery. Hopefully enough.

On a completely different note: today I received my Karma :) It was in the mail, about 2 inches long and made by Mattel. More people must have received this holiday gift from Fisker (it took a while to reach me in The Netherlands). A very nice gesture, much appreciated!

Here are a few pictures (it took a while, I had taken the model to my office). The Karma is a bit rudimentary, details like the wheels don't match and the paint of the head lights has come off. But I still think it's pretty cool! Didn't more people on the waiting list get this present?
