Fisker Automotive Inc., the maker of a luxury, plug-in hybrid sports car, will name former Chrysler Chief Executive Tom LaSorda as its Chief Executive Officer, a person familiar with the matter said.

Mr. LaSorda was named vice chairman of the company in December. He left Chrysler in 2009, where he was serving as co-president, when Fiat SpA took control of the company following its government-orchestrated bankruptcy.

Fisker has begun delivering the Karma sports car this year and has plans for another electric vehicle that will be built at a former General Motors Co. plant in Delaware. Earlier this month, Fisker disclosed that the U.S. Energy Department had halted the company's efforts to draw more money from a $529 million loan granted under an Obama administration program to spur development of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The Energy Department said it had frozen the Fisker loan because the company had missed certain deadlines in its plan to build a plug-in gas-electric hybrid at the Delaware factory.

Mr. LaSorda didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the story. A Fisker spokesman could not be immediately reached.

I listened to the call. Lasted less than 10 minutes. Some highlights:

Henrik opened with a general welcome and recap of Fisker's recent accomplishments, including the fact that the Karma is "fully on sale in both the US and Europe", the recent good reviews of the Karma and their speed to market.

Henrik then announced that it's time to move on to the next phase of the strategy, to continue to grow Fisker Automotive.

Henrik will be taking on a new role as Executive Chairman of Fisker Automotive and will be focused on building brand awareness and brand building, including in the Asia/Pacific region. He also will remain heavily involved in styling and design.

He then introduced Tom LaSorda as the new CEO to oversee daily operations.

Tom introduced himself, gave a very brief bio of his automotive experience and credentials, and discussed how Henrik introduced Fisker Automotive to him and got him involved. He expressed how excitied he was about the company and the opportunity and mentioned more than once the thought of California winters being preferable to Michigan ones.

It was otherwise very brief, no Q&A.

Co-Founder Henrik Fisker Becomes Executive Chairman of the Company

Anaheim, California USA – February 28, 2012: Fisker Automotive is pleased to announce that, effective immediately, Co-Founder Henrik Fisker will become Executive Chairman of the company, and Tom LaSorda is appointed CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board, with full responsibility for the running of the company’s day to day operations.

Henrik Fisker, who co-founded Fisker Automotive in 2007 after an illustrious design career at brands including BMW and Aston Martin, will focus on building the Fisker brand in global markets and the styling and design of future Fisker models.

“We have created a new automotive company, launched a new Electric Vehicle extended range technology and brought the Fisker Karma to market successfully in a remarkably short timeframe,” says Henrik Fisker.

“The Fisker Karma is the first car designed and engineered in America to win BBC Top Gear’s prestigious Luxury Car of the Year Award, as well as numerous other accolades, and that is something of which I am immensely proud.”

“I am looking forward to working closely with Tom as we steer the company into its future as an iconic global automotive brand with a range of desirable cars that offer environmentally responsible luxury.”

Tom LaSorda, who joined the company as Vice Chairman of the Board and executive advisor to the management team in December, will assume full CEO responsibilities and day to day operational management.

A well-known industry executive, with more than 30-years experience, LaSorda was a former CEO, President and Vice Chairman of the Chrysler Group and also held a number of executive positions at General Motors over a 23 year career.

“I am delighted to be assuming such a central role at this exciting time in Fisker Automotive’s history,” says LaSorda.

“The Fisker Automotive team has designed and engineered a great range-extended electric car with industry leading technology and it gives me great pleasure to be working together with the co-founders, Henrik Fisker and Barny Koehler to build Fisker Automotive into a global automotive company.”

“As part of our future strategy, we will be seeking strong partnerships and alliances as Fisker continues to grow as a brand.”

With the re-organization, Chairman of the Board, Ray Lane will assume a lead director role, as Henrik Fisker takes on the Executive Chairman role.

“Ray has been an invaluable guide and help to us as we have grown this company and its financial strength over the past few years. For a company to raise over $860m of private equity is a remarkable achievement and Ray’s support and guidance has been a key factor in that,” remarks Henrik Fisker.

“I am looking forward to working with the new leadership team as we move to the next level in the company’s history,” says Ray Lane.

I look at this as a very positive development. Henrik is a fantastic designer, but frankly I wasn't too impressed with his CEO skills, so getting someone in there who knows what they're doing is a big step in the right direction.

A good move, for Fisker and for Henrik (who I believe is best at designing stunning cars and at carrying out the brand name).

I think this is a good development.

Anyone interested in organizing with Fisker a closed door "owners" meeting? I think we could prioritize our asks through some polls and help Fisker focus on what is important to owners -- because it is our advocacy of the brand that is a necessary (though not sufficient) condition for their success (speaking as a marketing ROI consultant, based on $100 million worth of research). As an owner, I want Fisker to succeed & my daily driving experience to be without concerns of major glitches.

Tom LaSorda helped with Chrysler's sale to Fiat. With that experience, and by placing him at the helm, I wonder if Fisker's strategy now is to merge with one of the big mfrs? Just guessing, maybe nothing to it.

I and others on this Board have suggested that to Fisker HQ numerous times... it seems the HQ's view is that they'll get all the feedback they need from the dealers, so no need to talk to the actual owners... HUGELY lost opportunity. Enfranchising your customers is key for an early stage company.
