Engine "Exercise" mode

1968 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ixtractm
[/b]When I first got my Karma the engine used to run about every fourth or fifth time I "started' it. The engine would also cycle for 5-10 minuets while driving on occasion, especially in frigid weather.
Since the last update 614.2 I have noticed the engine now never runs unless I put it in sport mode.
Have any other noticed this? Actually I'm happy about it because the occasional "cycling" would cut into my MPG "score".

Only issue I am currently experiencing is I can no longer get my cell phone to pair with the car.

Blue and green screens are gone!

You shouldn't have any problem pairing your phone only thing that has some issues is the USB port as far as the engine cycle I'm not sure that was changed or not.Not owning one I don't get the pleasure of much seat time unless I'm road testing for problems . Like you said if you want to cycle the engine you can always put it in sport mode .

It is normal for the engine to run briefly after you refuel the car in order to clear the fuel lines or something along those lines. That is triggered by fuel cap being opened. I have noticed that the engine in my car also runs from time to time when the car is in Stealth mode and the battery is charged beyond the 15% level. I have reported this to my dealer and my guess is that one of the many computers in the Karma gets an erroneous indication that the fuel cap has been opened. If this is true, it would need to be fixed as part of the overall software fixes.
As I understand it, the Karma also has to run the engine periodically for emission control purposes. The car has to have a minimum amount of operation for the monitors and sensors to record, and for the car to be compiant with emission control standards. If you do not use Sport mode often (or ever) the car will occasionally run the ICE in Stealth mode long enough to meet whatever the requirement is. There may be non-emission reasons for doing so too, such as maintaining lubrication, fuel line presssure or cycling the fuel pump.

My engine runs every day since my commute distance is a bit longer than my car's electric range, so there would be no need for it to come on at random when the battery is fully charged.

Thanks so much for your above post. That is exactly what happened to me today after getting gas. I knew the right place to go for answers! Our family on the forum!
