Compass failure

I just happened to notice my compass heading no longer registers in the upper left of my instruments panel. There's just a dash -- It's no big deal. I always know which way I am heading. But anyone have this problem or know how to correct it?

Eric,

I've noticed this occasionally on my car as well. It's infrequent and corrects itself eventually. I've never delved into why it happens. I've wondered if the problem was turning on my car in a garage or deck where it couldn't get a GPS lock and got stuck acquiring, but I don't know. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes away and comes back again.

The reason why this happens is that the Karma does not have a separate compass sensor. It calculates heading based on location information from the GPS receiver. As a result, if the GPS receiver has not acquired enough satellites to calculate the current location, it cannot calculate the direction of travel. Once the GPS comes on line, the heading pops up on the dash.
does your navigation work?
Just checked. It doesn't work. It keeps trying to initialize. Must be an antenna issue?
Possible the CIU went bad . Can try reflashing 510 software I've never seen the GPS antenna stop working .Does the Nav screen come on at all what does it show ?
As others have said, the compass reading is straight from the CIU through the GPS sensor.

When it shows the "--", chances are the navigation portion of the CIU has crashed. Sometimes this can be recovered by letting the car go to sleep.

When you go to the navigation screen and it's has the funny spinning animation with the letter "Initializing... please wait.." chances are it will never initialize and just requires a restart.

Rarely though, the nav card needs to be reflashed.

Cheaper trying to reflash then replacing the complete CIU .

All the nav screen showes is a a multifaceted circle in the middle of the screen.
Fisker Fan has already described the problem and the possible fix. Try having the CIU reflashed.
Ive had the same issue for the past 2 months or so No nav, how do i reflash the CIU
Shoot me a message, I can do it

I should of known better then chiming in .
OK, My nav and compas have also stopped working. Everything seems to be fine now, except I don't have the Nav/direction working and I still can't turn the stereo off. Would re-flashing fix this? This is my daily and only car, so practically speaking, shipping it somewhere isn't a likely solution. No, I haven't used any of the warranty yet. Is there a way to fix this in my driveway? I've changed engines in other cars before and they worked when I started them...lol...so I know a bit about what I'm doing, IMHO. Help appreciated.
