Long explanation but here goes. The karma originally would use no battery in sport mode, in fact it would positively charge the battery while driving in sport so if you switched into sport mode with a partial charge you would start increasing range while driving and finish the drive with more ev range than you started. Sounds great right? However when the cars needed to be certified by the epa and max fuel economy ratings, it was determined that this scenario was wasting fuel by loading the generator to charge. So mathematically the best overall "fuel" economy is achieved using averaging thus using the first half of the charge even with ICE on but not loading it, then at approx 26 mile range it switches the generator to "maintain" and the system will only charge the amount being consumed thus it stays at 26.
The issue with the calculations is that this car can be driven/used so many different ways it is unfair to force it to be used this way but "Ce La Vie"
