I contacted Allstate today to see what my Karma will cost to insure, and the number they came back with was $744 for 6 months. That seems really steep to me since my $155,000 Aston Martin which is a far more dangerous car and costly to fix only costs $700 for 6 months.

So, I'm going to shop around, but I wanted to see what others have found first.

Thanks,

It's not the $44, it's the fact that it's anywhere near that much money. I mean if I'm going to die anytime soon it's going to be while driving the Aston - it makes me do bad things. The Karma's just a 4-door sedan - not likely to die in it. Expensive, yes, but pretty safe and tame compared to the Aston. Plus, if I crack the windshield on the Karma I doubt it'll cost $1600 which is what the Aston's windshield costs.

Nope. I called my insurance agent (affiliated with Farmers Insurance, I have regular house + earthquake + umbrella + auto insurance with them and get a pretty good deal) last week and asked what it would cost to add a Fisker Karma. The girl on the phone (my agent is a guy named Paul but there are two women in the office as well, and they do most of the real work :D) said: "a what what?"

After a lot of poking around and calling their underwriter they said they can't even give me a ballpark number yet. If I get a VIN they might be able to do more, otherwise they think there's a good chance they'll have more info by the end of January.

She did find a photo of the car and thought it looked spectacular, though! :D

So, I've been checking around, and it ends up several insurance companies (like Geico) won't insure it at all (yet). State Farm will, and it came out to $581 which is much better than Allstate's $744. However, to get that price I'd have to move all of my policies over otherwise as a single-car insurance policy it was pretty close to Allstate. Ends up their insurance on the Aston was $100 less too! So, I might be doing that, but that's the best price I've been able to find so far.

Yeah, no web site lists this car so you have to actually call someone. Progressive was the same as Geico - "our underwriter cannot insure that car right now". Allstate and State Farm were the only two i've found so far who would.

It must be a simple lack of knowledge. I think a year from now, insurance will be a lot more available and cheaper. Like you said, something like the Aston, or even my SLK55 are a lot more dangerous than the Karma. You would have to really be trying hard to lose traction with the Karma.

I checked with AAA a couple of months ago and they said that they did not have it in their VIN database yet but did not see any problem insuring it once they got the information.

Back in July I called Allstate and they had no idea what the car was and just quoted me based on the car's cost. I think they said it would be about $300 more a year for the same coverage level as on my SLK55 (funny, two people with the same fairly rare car about to move into the same exceedingly rare car). They said they would rate the car after a year or so when they had enough data.

Guys,

Try the VIN listed below. It is supposed to be for the demo that the Winston Salem dealer has. I tried online with USAA but it didn't recognize it and said to call an agent. I have since cancelled my deposit and didn't follow through. I'd be interested in seeing how they all compare. Mine would skyrocket with a 16 year old in the driving pool!
