2012 Karma vs Tesla 3 Impressions
 
At the request of another member, I’m posting my experiences as an owner of both of the captioned cars. I know there were owners of both 2012 and Model S cars, which may be worth digging up also, since the 3 has many similarities with the S.

On looks I think the Fisker Karma is always going to be the winner: unique, head-turning, etc. I always wanted a 1965 corvette, and this car checks all the boxes with 50 years worth of better technology (and seatbelts).

Which leads logically to the contrast with the 3: the 3 is like the first iPhone, and the 2012 is like a Motorola razr, if that makes sense.

The Tesla is amazingly fun to drive: responsive, quiet, fast, and beautiful inside - sounds like the ugly friend someone wants to set you up with, but here it’s not an ugly friend, but it will be as common as dirt in a few years (like the S), but I’m ok with that, because it’s extremely fun and the tech is outstanding: one example as I sit in the 3 waiting for my kid to finish swim practice is the radio: stations are better than Sirius, and all free. You can ask the thing to play a song, and it can do it. You can type a destination into the gps lightning fast (or speak it), and it’s all there in enormous satellite glory. Contrast that with the fisker’s gps, where your first entry is the zip code?! Then street name (not number)?! Who designed this?

So Bart: don’t cancel your model 3 reservation. I have 2 reservations, and I may buy the $35k base version if Elon ever makes it. One fisker, on the other hand, is enough.

Thanks for your response. What about comfort of driving? Some reviews about the Fisker report on excellent driver comfort. Did you do long trips with the model 3, like more than 2 hours? How do both compare with respect to this?

I also have Model 3 reservation and know that trying to compare these two cars is quite ridiculous. That they both have a HV battery, is the only common ground they have. To compare a >6 year old user interface with a contemporary one is a waste of time.

The purpose of a car is to bring one from point A to B etc. The Fisker does this in a very comfortable way. Of course the cars are of a different price class, but basically one doesn't need all (or none) of the gimmicks. What I miss in my Fisker, I can find mostly in my Phone, like for example Here maps for navigation. Long drives are not tiring. I really am in doubt to cancel my reservation for the model 3, but because it is not possible yet to test drive a model 3 in Europe, at this time it would be helpfull to read some comparisons between the Fisker and the model 3 although they are of course not available due to the sparse number producedÖ For example I like the comprehensive comparisons published on greencarreports.com

It’s difficult, yes, but comparisons can be made between an Apple and a banana.

Bart: on the topic of comfort, I would say the Tesla would be my preferred vehicle for a 2+ hour ride, for these reasons:
1. Electric range - I’ve taken four 2.5 drives in the Tesla, and each used about half of the 320-mike range of the car (in other words, it’s an all-electric ride, whereas in the fisker only 20% (40 miles) of the ride would be electric).
2. Reliability - when the karma runs out of charge, things can get funky (like the a/c not working). If I was stuck in the side of the road 2 hours away, I’d rather be in a Tesla.
3. Adaptive cruise control/lane change warnings/autopilot - all these make the ride more automated/less tiring, and safer.
4. Entertainment - the audio quality, and the programming (built in podcasts, satellite radio, on demand music) makes the ride more enjoyable. Yes you can plug your iPhone in to the karma and have similar functionality (which is why this is #4 , not #1 ), but the Tesla experience is just easier to manage while driving.

The karma is undoubtedly the better looking vehicle, and because neither car has gears they’re both smooth rides in city traffic, but the Tesla is more comfortable and reliable and what I’d drive on a 2-hour trip. For many of the above reasons, when both cars are home on the weekend, I find myself taking the Tesla for short haul trips also (the Karma is becoming more of a museum piece I have to preserve, not drive needlessly - it also gets banged up in parking lots because it’s so front-forward and low fascia)
