Default Question for California Karma owners

Here's a question I'm hoping you California Karma owners can answer for me.
What are the yearly taxes on your Karma?
My Karma is licensed in Fairfax county Virginia and I am paying around $2100 a year for property tax, plus another $110 for licensing tabs.
The Karma is in storage/consignment while I am out of the country. I'm thinking about relocating it to Santa Clara county to save $$$ and the market for a Karma might be stronger there.
Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

You can check out that calculator..

If you are not going to be driving the car for sometime you way want to consider doing non-op.

If your vehicle as at the consignment dealer they can throw dealer plates on the vehicle for test-drives as it is in their inventory.

I paid $477.00 for my 2017 Karma registration. I live in Alameda county which is across the bay from Santa Clara county.

Thanks Marswill and Power Source,,
Looks like a good option for me.
In Virginia you don't have an option of turning in the plates and declaring the car inop. They assess 5% of the cars value every year for property tax whether the car is on the road or not.
A few years ago the Karma was not listed in KBB so they were using Black Book.com to come up with the value of the Karma. My property tax bill was $3200. Contesting it was useless.

That's crazy. And i thought California was bad! MY Karma was $572 this year for annual renewal.

In addition to the non-op, you can always form a Montana LLC and register your car there, if you're not using it much on California roads.

At the Great Falls, VA cars and coffee every Saturday morning probably 50% of the high end cars have Montana plates.

I wonder why your Karma was almost a hundred dollars more than mine?

I suppose that is the "unintended consequence" of high VA fees: people look for ways around them. I don't see many Montana registrations/plates here in CA, but I have noticed many more exotic cars advertised online these days with Montana titles.

I wondered the exact same thing, and I have been looking for the detailed breakdown of fees so I can compare with you!

A republican won the governor's race (Jim Gilmore) by "NO CAR TAX" Slogan -- then all the socialist from up north moved down here and we ended up with Liberal Socialist like Mark Warner, Jim Kane who reimposed most of the CAR TAX. Virginian were waking up (elected McDonald) , but somehow the socialist in our midst found a way to Oust McDonnell - so we ended up with a Hillary Stuge in Terry McAuliffe -- Don't know if Virginia will ever revert back to a libertarian minded commonwealth. With great regret, I sold my beloved audi r8 caused is was costing me over 6K (on 2K miles a year) and the Karma only 3K (for 3K miles a year) -- even if I had the money , the principal just aggravated me (I have other 6 cars ) - go figure how dumb a government can be. You think they charge by the mile and make it more equitable, instead they tax value and thereby discouraging buyer from their pursuit of happiness.

such is life!

In California, the car tax played an important role in the recall of Then Governor Gray Davis in 2003. He was unpopular already, but when he tripled the car tax to help defray the state's post Tech Crash budget shortfall, the recall movement got a major cause to rally around, and the recall election kicked him out and installed Governor Terminator for the reminder of his term.

I still remember getting my renewal notice at the time and almost passing out when I saw that the State was asking close to $2,000 to register my 10 year old car for another year. One of the first acts of the new Governor was to rescind the car tax hikes. I never paid the $2K fee; I winder if anyone ever did. But it definitely was the end for Gray Davis.
