I always heard the OBCM was limited to 3.3kw anyway; so higher amperage and/or voltage isn't going to do you any good. A 30A EVSE is not going to be any faster than a 40A EVSE. The original Fisker branded Lear EVSE was a 16A unit, which is as fast as the Karma could handle anyway.

The reason they probably limited to 18A is because power distribution in europe is mostly 3 phase and each phase is limited to 16A (breaker capacity) and being that the Karma is basically a worldwide car they spec'd the same OBCM for all markets.

Take a look at the following pictures:

The OBCM voltage ranges goes to 250V
An EVSE like the L2 Leaf one is compatible with this voltage

You could change the transformer so it steps up to 250V
